Landscape A3 brings it down to eight
A0 at 841 by 1189 mm tiled onto portrait A3 (297 by 420 mm) needs a 3 by 3 grid of nine sheets. Turn the A3 landscape at 420 by 297 mm and it becomes two columns by four rows, exactly eight. The tool computes both orientations and takes the smaller one, so you never have to work this out yourself.
Rebuilding a conference poster overnight
A print shop charges thirty to fifty dollars for an A0 and wants two or three days. That is no help when a reviewer comment lands the day before, or a figure needs replacing. With an A3 printer, or a copy shop on the way to the venue, eight sheets and half an hour of gluing gets you a finished poster on the morning of the session. Poster sessions are viewed from one or two metres, where the seams simply do not register.
Transporting the finished poster
Roll the assembled A0 into a poster tube around 8 cm in diameter. Rolling before the adhesive has fully set peels the seams apart, so leave it flat for thirty to sixty minutes first. Carry a few strips of double-sided tape to the venue in case a seam lifts when you unroll it.

How many A3 sheets make an A0?
Eight, as a 2 by 4 grid of landscape A3 covering 841 by 1189 mm. Adding the default 5 mm margin and 5 mm flap pushes it to about fifteen in a 3 by 5 grid, so set the overlap to zero if the page count matters more than the seams.
What size are conference posters?
A0 at 841 by 1189 mm is the most common in Japan, followed by a 900 by 1800 mm portrait panel. International conferences often specify 48 by 36 inches, which is 1219 by 914 mm. Use the custom size field to enter any of these in millimetres.
Does vector PDF artwork lose quality?
This tool rasterises the chosen PDF page before slicing it, so the enlarged detail depends on that rasterisation. For a text-heavy poster the result is more than sharp enough. For a design full of hairline rules, export a high-resolution image from your design application and load that instead.
