An A1 poster is eight A4 sheets and an A0 poster is sixteen. Pick a finished size and a sheet size and the tool chooses the sheet orientation that needs the fewest pages, then labels every page with a row letter and a column number. A1 tiled onto portrait A4 needs a 3 by 3 grid of nine sheets; turn the A4 landscape and the same poster fits on 2 by 4, which is eight. That choice is made for you each time.
Glue flaps go on the right and bottom edges
Choose an overlap of 0, 5, 10 or 15 mm. Each sheet repeats a strip of its right-hand and lower neighbour, so you trim the sheet that goes on top along the fold line and lay it over the one beneath. Consumer printers commonly feed one or two millimetres out of true, which is what the default 5 mm absorbs. Go to 10 mm for photographic detail or for a sewing pattern where the seam lines have to meet exactly.
The 50 mm ruler that proves the scale
The usual way tiled printing goes wrong is a print dialog quietly applying Fit to page, which shrinks every sheet to about 96 percent. So page one carries a 50 mm ruler and the note Print at 100% (Actual size). Measure it after printing: exactly 50 mm means the settings are right, 48 mm means the driver scaled the job down and the seams will not meet. Always check this before cutting a pattern.
Big text signs, no artwork needed
Switch the source to text mode and your words are drawn on a browser canvas and then tiled, so you can make a giant CLOSED or SALE sign without any image file. Because the text is rasterised rather than set with a PDF font, non-Latin scripts such as Japanese work too. Add line breaks for multiple lines; the type is scaled to fill the finished size automatically.
Frequently asked questions
Which file formats work?
JPEG, PNG and HEIC images plus PDF. For a multi-page PDF you choose which page to tile. You can also skip the file entirely and type text instead. The output is always a multi-page PDF.
My print comes out slightly too small. Why?
The scaling setting in the print dialog. In Adobe Acrobat Reader on Windows set Page Sizing to Actual size; in Preview on macOS set Scale to 100 percent. Then measure the 50 mm ruler on page one. Because the final dimensions depend on the printer driver, no browser tool can guarantee them for you.
How many A4 sheets does an A0 poster take?
Sixteen in theory, a 4 by 4 grid, with no margin and no overlap. In practice printers keep an unprintable border, so with a 5 mm margin and a 5 mm glue flap you get roughly 25 sheets in a 5 by 5 grid. Switching the output to A3 brings it back down to about eight.
Can I print this at a copy shop?
Yes. Send the PDF as it is. Choosing A3 doubles the area per sheet and halves the page count. At the shop, still select actual size or 100 percent rather than fit to page. In Japan a colour A3 sheet from a convenience-store copier costs around 100 yen, monochrome around 20 yen.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Decoding the image, rasterising the PDF, slicing the tiles and writing the output all happen in JavaScript inside your browser. The file never reaches a network, and the page keeps working offline.
