The wall you hit in a word processor
Word will accept a font size up to 1638 pt, about 578 mm, but it still only prints what fits on the sheet. Filling the 297 mm height of a portrait A4 is not always enough to be read across a car park. This page draws your text on a browser canvas and then tiles it, so the type scales to fill whatever finished size you ask for, up to A0 and beyond.
Why non-Latin text works here
The standard PDF fonts such as Helvetica cover Latin characters only, so writing Japanese or Korean straight into a PDF normally means embedding a large font file. This tool rasterises the text as an image before placing it, which sidesteps embedding entirely: kanji, kana, accented Latin and other scripts all render exactly as they do on screen. Line breaks give you multiple lines and the size adjusts to fit.
How big does it need to be?
A rough rule is that one centimetre of letter height is readable from about three metres. To be read at ten metres you want letters at least 30 mm tall, and at twenty metres at least 70 mm. Four characters filling an A2 sheet at 420 by 594 mm gives letters around 200 mm tall, readable well beyond twenty metres, which is the scale construction site and car park signs need.
Making a paper sign last
Black on white remains the most legible combination there is. For outdoor use, slip the assembled sign into a clear sleeve or cover it with self-adhesive laminating film so rain does not destroy it. A seam crossing a letter stroke hurts readability, so with only a few characters, nudge the finished size slightly to move the join into the space between them.

Do I need a file at all?
No. Switch the source to text mode, type your words, and the tiled PDF is built without loading any image or PDF.
Can I choose the typeface?
The tool uses a bold sans-serif from your own device, trying Hiragino, Yu Gothic, Meiryo and the system default in turn, so it looks right on both Windows and macOS. For precise typography, set the text in an image editor, export a picture and load that in file mode instead.
How many characters can I use?
There is no hard limit, but more characters means smaller ones. For a sign read from a distance, keep to four to six characters per line and use line breaks to split a longer message across two or three lines.
