Banners and long formats at any size you enter

A long thin banner such as 1800 by 450 mm is not on any standard size list. This page takes a finished size in millimetres and tiles it across a row of A4 sheets, so long formats work as easily as A-series ones.

Common banner dimensions

Supporters banners and sports-day banners cluster around a few sizes: 1800 by 450 mm, 3600 by 900 mm and 5400 by 900 mm. Anything hung on a gym wall or a schoolyard fence is usually about 3600 mm wide, while indoor and shop banners are nearer 1800. This page defaults to 1800 by 450 mm, which comes out as a single row of landscape A4 sheets.

A full-size proof before you order fabric

A printed vinyl banner 3600 mm wide costs somewhere between 100 and 250 dollars from a trade printer. Making a paper proof at full size first tells you whether the lettering is actually readable from where it will hang, which is much cheaper than reprinting the vinyl. For a one-day school event, the paper version is often all you need.

Choose a split that does not cut every letter

On a wide banner, splitting along the height puts a seam through every single character. At 450 mm tall, portrait A4 in two rows leaves fewer joins than landscape A4 in three. The tool picks the orientation that needs the fewest sheets, and setting the height near 400 mm usually keeps it to two rows.

Making a paper banner survive the day

Paper tears under its own weight if it hangs for long. Reinforce the whole back with a lattice of cloth tape, or bond it to a lightweight non-woven backing. If you are threading cord through the ends, sandwich a strip of card before punching eyelets so they do not pull out. Outdoors, tie the bottom edge as well or the wind will take it.

Frequently asked questions

What custom sizes are allowed?

Anything from 20 mm to 5000 mm on each side. A 5000 mm banner on A4 runs past 25 sheets, so keep an eye on the sheet count and stay somewhere practical.

How tall do banner letters need to be?

To be read from the far side of a schoolyard, assume about 20 metres and make the letters at least 70 mm tall. On a 450 mm banner you can go to around 300 mm, which reads from 50 metres and beyond.

Can it print onto fabric or vinyl?

This tool outputs a PDF for paper printing. Fabric and vinyl come from a trade printer, but a paper proof from this page is exactly what you want to check the design at full size before you place that order.
