Why 63 by 88 mm is the number
Nearly every major trading card game settled on 63 by 88 mm, and commercial sleeves are cut to match, with an internal size around 66 by 91 mm sold as standard or regular. If you intend to sleeve a home-made card alongside real ones, a single millimetre of extra width will stop it going in — cut just inside the trim line rather than outside it.
Getting the thickness right
A real card is about 0.3 mm thick; 200 gsm A4 stock is nearer 0.22 mm and feels thin. The simplest fix is to sleeve the printed card with a spare card behind it, which brings the feel back and hides the difference in a shuffled deck. Laminating two printed faces together works too, but demands a very accurate cut.
Prototyping a game
While a game is being balanced, names, costs and rules text change constantly. Use the CSV merge: keep the card data in a spreadsheet, hand it to the text fields, and print a whole revision in one pass with only the frame supplied as an image. A balance change goes from artwork edit to printed deck in a couple of minutes.
Frequently asked questions
Do the corners have to be rounded to sleeve them?
No — sleeves have enough slack for square corners. Sharp corners do wear the bottom of the sleeve over time, so a 3 mm corner punch is worth using if the deck will see real play.
Can I fit more than nine on A4?
Nine is the maximum. Even at zero margin a fourth row would need 352 mm and A4 gives 297. Switching to A3 doubles the sheet to eighteen up.
Can I print card backs as well?
Yes. Turn on double-sided and load the back design; front and mirrored back sheets alternate in the PDF. Card backs show misregistration badly, so run one plain-paper test and check it against a light before printing the real stock.
