Why the margin has to be zero
Two postcards across measure 200 mm against A4 width of 210, leaving 5 mm each side. Two down measure 296 mm against 297, leaving half a millimetre. Four-up only works with the margin at zero, so the outer cards land inside the printer is unprintable border and finish a couple of millimetres short. Plan for that, or move to the alternative below.
When you need four perfect cards
Print six-up on A3, or drop to two-up on A4 in landscape. Two-up leaves a generous margin all round, so nothing is clipped even on a printer with a wide leading edge. For an invitation where the finished size actually matters, two-up on A4 is the safer choice.
How much resolution a postcard needs
At 300 dpi a 100 by 148 mm card wants roughly 1181 by 1748 pixels. A normal phone photo at 4000 by 3000 has plenty. An image saved from social media at 1080 pixels wide lands nearer 200 dpi, which softens the edges of any lettering — re-export from the original if the design carries text.
Frequently asked questions
Can these be mailed as postcards?
In Japan, 100 by 148 mm is within the official postcard specification, so a privately printed card can be posted at the postcard rate provided the stock is thick enough — around 0.15 to 0.25 mm, or 180 gsm. Postal rules differ elsewhere, so check your local minimum thickness.
Can I make the address side at the same time?
Turn on double-sided and load a second design; the back sheet is emitted mirrored so it registers when you duplex. If addresses will be handwritten, a back design with a few pale grey rules makes writing straight much easier.
I need more than four.
