Why A5 fits A4 exactly
ISO A sizes halve along the long edge: A4 is 210 x 297 mm and A5 is 148 x 210 mm. Turn A4 sideways to 297 x 210 mm and two A5 pages sit side by side with no margin and no waste. That is why the whole Japanese small-press scene defaults to it.
Printing it at a Japanese convenience store
Copiers at 7-Eleven, FamilyMart and Lawson take a PDF from a USB stick or a network-print reservation code. Choose A4, colour or monochrome, and duplex with long-edge binding. Monochrome runs about 10 yen a sheet and colour 50 to 60 yen. A 32-page book needs eight sheets. Stack them in order, staple twice through the centre with a saddle stapler, and fold.
This is not the file you send to a printer
A commercial order for an A5 book wants single unimposed pages, usually at 154 x 216 mm with 3mm of bleed. Use the bleed and trim-marks job on this site for that. Bleed, trim marks and paper thickness differ from printer to printer — always check the spec sheet of the shop you are submitting to.
Frequently asked questions
What paper weight works best?
Ordinary 64 to 90 gsm copier paper feeds well; 80 gsm or heavier keeps duplex printing from showing through. Anything much thicker makes the spine bulge and the staple struggle.
How many book pages does one A4 sheet hold?
Four — two per side. A 24-page book takes six sheets and a 40-page book takes ten.
My source pages are A4, not A5. Can I still use this?
Yes. Choosing A5 scales each A4 page down to fit the A5 slot. Small body text can get hard to read, so print one test sheet before running the whole job.
